Kenya’s KETRACO publishes 2023-27 strategic plan worth USD2.7 billion

The state-owned Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has unveiled its 2023-27 Strategic Plan, revealing ambitious initiatives to construct 4,600 km of high voltage transmission lines and 36 high voltage substations nationwide.

Since its establishment in 2008, KETRACO has successfully completed 5,476 km of high voltage transmission lines and 39 high voltage substations. Over the next five years, the company aims to bring 41 transmission line and substation projects to fruition, and establish a USD50 million national system control centre. The plan involves an investment of USD2.73 billion. KETRACO intends to finance these projects through a blend of internal revenue streams, external sources, public private partnerships (PPP), innovative financing models, and potentially exploring opportunities in commercialising extra fibre optic capacity. KETRACO also plans to initiate planning and pre-construction activities for 22 new transmission lines and 20 substations, including 13 feasibility studies, over the next five years.
