Tata Power is set to install a 100 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) across 10 strategic locations in Mumbai over the next two years, following approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical infrastructure such as the metro, hospitals, airport, and data centers during grid disturbances, while also supporting grid stability through islanding to prevent blackouts. The BESS will be equipped with advanced ‘black start’ functionality for rapid power recovery and will help manage peak load efficiently. Additionally, the system will provide ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support, and enable better utilisation of renewable energy, particularly solar power. The entire capacity will be centrally monitored and controlled by Tata Power’s power system control centre.
