Oman allocates USD2.2 billion to grid modernisation and renewable integration

Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has committed USD2.2 billion to develop 32 strategic projects between 2024 and 2028, aimed at the upgradation and expansion of the country’s transmission infrastructure.

The investment will support the growing need to integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the national grid. This follows a previous capital expenditure of USD1.2 billion during 2019-23 for grid expansion activities. One of the major focus areas among these projects is the Phase II of the North-South Interconnection Project, known as RABT, to link the northern Main Interconnected System with the southern Dhofar System, and accelerate the process of integration with large renewable resource zones. Once operational, this project is expected to cut carbon emissions by over 474,000 tonnes annually by enabling the decommissioning of 14 diesel-powered plants. To enhance the national grid’s capabilities, OETC also plans to add over 20 substations by 2028. In addition to this, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, the sole buyer and procurer of new capacity, plans to develop over 4 GW of solar and wind power projects by 2029.
