CIL and DVC sign JV for 1,600 MW coal-based expansion at Chandrapura

Coal India Limited (CIL) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have signed a joint venture (JV) agreement to undertake the brownfield expansion of a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power project at DVC’s Chandrapura TPS in Jharkhand.

The project will be developed on a 50:50 equity sharing basis, with coal sourced from CIL’s Jharkhand-based Central Coalfields Limited. The project is estimated at Rs 210 billion and includes development, construction, and commissioning, and is expected to be completed by 2031–32. The JV will also explore other thermal and renewable energy collaborations. As a brownfield project within the coalfield region, it benefits from existing infrastructure, helping to reduce costs and accelerate timelines.
