The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 650 million policy-based loan to support the Government of India’s efforts to scale up rooftop solar deployment and provide clean electricity access to 10 million households by 2027.
The financing includes USD 3 million in technical assistance for implementing reforms, institutional capacity-building, and promoting gender-inclusive participation in the sector. The funding supports subprogram 1 of the accelerating affordable and inclusive rooftop solar systems development program aligned with the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme provides residential consumers with financial assistance to install rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW, offering a 60 per cent subsidy for the first 2 kW and 40 per cent for the next 1 kW. This follows ADB’s earlier USD 460 million loan for the Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Program to support agrivoltaics and rural infrastructure upgrades.
