The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the Philippines’ power sector regulator, has received 17 applications for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across the Visayas and Mindanao provinces, highlighting growing investor interest in energy storage to improve grid reliability and support renewable energy integration.
According to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the projects are being driven by growing system flexibility requirements as recurring yellow and red grid alerts – issued when operating reserves become critically low or insufficient to meet demand – continue to expose transmission bottlenecks and operational constraints despite adequate generation capacity. The regulator noted that BESSs have become essential for grid operations by storing surplus renewable energy and dispatching it during peak demand or supply disruptions. It also highlighted that the expansion of industrial facilities, data centres, logistics hubs, cold-storage facilities, and digital infrastructure across the Visayas and Mindanao is increasing demand for a more reliable electricity supply.
