French TotalEnergies signs PPA for wind and storage project in Kazakhstan

French multinational TotalEnergies SE unveiled that a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed in Kazakhstan for the Mirny project.

The project is the largest wind energy project in the country that will cost USD1.4 billion to complete. The project is being built in southern Kazakhstan’s Zhambyl region and entails the development of a 1 GW onshore wind farm along with 600 MWh of battery energy storage system. The electricity generated by the Mirny project will be entirely sold to Kazakhstan for supplying a million people. The country’s national oil and gas company, KazMunayGas, and the Samruk-Kazyna National Wealth Fund, which will each own 20 per cent of the project, will collaborate with TotalEnergies to develop the Mirny project. The project will have about 200 wind turbines and will help the country reach its goal of generating 15 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. TotalEnergies already operates two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 128 MW in the country.
